The team at Viva Dental Studio spoke to a number of their emergency clients. We listened to their concerns when they are awoken in the dead of night by toothache. Many explain they just did not know what to do!

The Unexpected Toothache

We never know when we may experience a dental emergency. Most wake up in the dead of night with a raging toothache. Nothing is worse than toothache. During sporting activities your child or partner could sustain a dental injury, even have a tooth knocked out. What is more the softest piece of bread can cause your tooth to crumble. Ever experienced any of these?

Tooth ache

This is the most common dental emergency. It can be experienced by anyone and at any time. It is important to floss gently around the area and rinse with warm water. Most of the time food trap is the cause of the pain and once removed will reduce the pain. You can soothe the area externally with a cold compress. This will reduce inflammation. Remember

Avoid the use of toothpicks. Toothpicks cause trauma to the gums and make them sore. Soreness will make the pain worse and more constant.

Crown/Filling Come Out

A hole in the tooth can cause extreme sensitivity. When possible place a ‘over the counter’ temporary filling. If you delay seeking help the pain will worsen and could result in you losing the tooth. Chipped tooth

It is important we speak to you immediately. Save any tooth pieces. DO NOT store the tooth pieces in tissue. Apply pressure with gauze to any areas that are bleeding. Contact the Studio immediately for a same day emergency appointment 01708 446 447

Tooth Knocked Out

It is important to save the tooth. The narrowest tip is the root and the widest part is the crown (the part we see in the mouth). Never handle the root tip. Holding the crown rinse the root tip. DO NOT touch the root. If you are confident, place the root tip back in the gum and bite on gauze. Unsure of what to do? Store the tooth in milk and attend the Dental Studio as soon as possible (ideally within 45 minutes of the incident). Swelling

Swellings can be caused by an infection. It is important to find out the cause of the swelling so it can be dealt with quickly. Swellings can get worse very quickly. Do not delay in contacting the Studio immediately for a same day emergency appointment 01708 446 447
