Do you ever envy anyone with beautifully white teeth? Do you brush yours in the morning and regret the years of black coffee, tea or red wine? Are you constantly buying the latest whitening toothpaste and not seeing any difference? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, professional teeth whitening may be worth exploring.
Whitening toothpaste can help lift surface stains day to day, but long-term use can gradually wear away the enamel. It’s not a substitute for a proper whitening treatment when you want a real, visible change.
Teeth whitening options: in-practice or at-home
At-home whitening kits bought online can be tempting, but they come with real risks when there’s no dental supervision. For example, you can get uneven results, gum irritation, or potential damage to the tooth structure itself.
At Viva Dental Studio, we offer a few options to help with your teeth whitening journey either at home or at our dental practice in Hornchuch. Whichever route you choose, your treatment is planned and carried out by fully qualified dentists, with your dental health and comfort as the priority.
There isn’t one “right” way to whiten your teeth. It depends on how quickly you want results, or how much you want a dentist managing the process day to day.
In-practice whitening: what to expect
After a dental examination from your dentist, to confirm you’re a suitable candidate, we offer two in-practice teeth whitening options:
- Zoom whitening. This option is a good fit if you want a visible result quickly, for example ahead of an event. It consists of a single appointment, usually taking around an hour. A peroxide-based gel is applied to the tooth surface and activated with an LED light, with your lips and gums protected throughout. The intensity can be adjusted to keep you comfortable, and the appointment finishes with a short fluoride treatment.
- Enlighten whitening. This options blurs the line between “in-practice” and “at-home,” which is exactly why it suits patients who want a gradual build-up but still want a dentist-led finish. It involves custom trays worn at home over a number of nights, followed by a final power-whitening session at the practice to complete and lock in the result.
At-home whitening: what to expecT
Impressions are taken to create trays custom-fitted to your teeth. You’re given whitening gel and shown exactly how to use and clean the trays, then wear them over a set number of days or nights as instructed. This is also the first phase of the Enlighten system described above, if you choose that route. Many patients notice a difference within the first few days, with the full result building gradually.
Is teeth whitening worth it?
For most patients, yes. When done properly, teeth whitening is one of the most effective ways to brighten your smile. Results do fade gradually with diet and lifestyle habits (coffee, red wine, smoking), which is why some patients use an occasional at-home top-up between visits.
