What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a replacement for the tooth root. A metal anchor is inserted into jawbone to provide stable support for your replacement tooth that could be a crown, bridge or denture.

Types of Dental Implants and Procedures

The most common type of implant is an Endosteal Implant which is placed right into the jawbone.

Also, there is Subperiosteal implants that are placed above the jawbone but under the gum and are mostly used for patients that have shallow jawbone. Alternatively, for patients with shallow jawbone there is the option of bone grafting. Bone grafting is the procedure of building up or adding bone to the jaw. Once the grafted bone has fused to natural bone the implant can be placed.

Depending on the procedure, the dental implant process can last between 6 to 8 months as there are a few steps to follow and the healing process can vary from patient to patient.

Why would I choose a Dental Implant?

Dental Implants are a very strong support for replacement teeth, they feel more like natural teeth, are more aesthetic and can last a lifetime with regular, proper care.

Taking care of my Dental Implant

Cleaning an implant is just as important as cleaning natural teeth. Regular visits to your dentist and hygienist are not to be missed. Flossing around the implants is extremely important and brush your implants after every meal. Avoid sticky foods or chewing ice. Thorough oral hygiene is necessary to prevent gum diseases and infections around the implant.
