COSMETIC BONDING – GAP CLOSURE

What is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is the where a tooth-coloured composite resin material is applied to the tooth to repair decay, chipped, fractured or discoulored teeth. Unlike veneers, bonding can be done in a single visit. The reason the procedure is called bonding is because the composite resin material bonds to the tooth. This procedure is becoming more and more popular to close gaps between the teeth.

How does it work?

Cosmetic bonding normally involves no preparation work, anesthetic is not used unless the bonding is being used to fill a decayed tooth.

The dentist uses a shade guide to select the composite resin material colour that will best match the colour of your teeth.

Once the dentist has decided on the colour, they will apply etch to the tooth surface to roughen it. The tooth is then lightly coated with a bonding liquid, which helps the cosmetic bonding material adhere.

Once the tooth is prepared, the dentist will then apply the tooth-coloured composite resin material. The resin material is moulded and smoothed until it is the proper shape. The material is hardened with an ultraviolet light.

After the bonding material hardens, the dentist will further trim and shape it. Then they will polish the material until it matches the sheen of the rest of the tooth surface.

Procedures can usually take about 30 minutes to an hour to complete depending on how many teeth are being treated.

How to look after your bonded teeth?

It is important to avoid tea, coffee, cigarettes and other substances that can stain the composite resin material. We recommend that to prevent or minimise stains, it is essential to avoid eating or drinking foods that can stain for the first 48 hours after any composite procedure. In addition, brush your teeth often and have them cleaned regularly by our dental hygienist.
